Career summary:
After bursting onto the World Rally Championship scene in 2005, young Australian Chris Atkinson has rapidly emerged as a potential star of the future. As the son of a rallying enthusiast and competitor, Chris was introduced to the sport at an early age but favoured soccer, rugby, tennis and two-wheeled competition in the form of motocross in his early sporting years.
After studying commerce on a university scholarship, Atkinson turned his attention to rallying. After initially co-driving for his brother, Chris switched seats and quickly impressed with his pace in the 2001 and 2002 Australian series. Atkinson took the FIA Asia-Pacific Super 1600 crown with Suzuki in 2003, then took second in the Australian series in a Group N Subaru in 2004, as well as successfully defending his Asia-Pacific Super 1600 crown and impressing on several WRC outings in the Production field. His fifth place on home soil garnered the attention of the works Subaru team, which signed him up for a full WRC assault in 2005.
Atkinson understandably took time to get to grips with the diversity of stages in the WRC in his debut year, his regular bursts of speed and stage-topping times have shown that the pace is there. 2006 was still a development year for Atkinson. The Aussie finished the season 10th in the drivers' standings while finding points in seven of the season's sixteen rallies. Atkinson narrowly missed out on a podium in Japan, and led early in Australia before an unfortunate off led to an eventual retirement from his home rally. In 2006 Atkinson signed a contract extension with Subaru, which means the Aussie will be present in the championship with team in 2008.
